Abstract

Protection of intellectual property is the prerequisite for the introduction of innovations, reducing innovation risks, as well as financing R&D of drug development.

Aim. To analyze and systematize existing scientific approaches and mechanisms of commercialization of intellectual property in pharmacy for building a process model of this activity.

Materials and methods. We used such methods as: systematization of basic research directions that accompany the life cycle of medicine; cognitive method; systematic approach based on retrospective method and system logic analysis; method of Integration Definition for Function Modeling – IDEF0 (process model for the commercialization of intellectual property in pharmacy).

Results. We presented methodological and methodical approaches of patent protection and commercialization of intellectual property during the drug life cycle and it has proposed process model of commercialization of intellectual property in pharmacy, the main subprocesses of which are “Search for new idea drugs”, commercialization of intellectual property at the stage of “Pharmaceutical development, preclinical, clinical research”, “Technology  transfer”, “Commercial manufacturing, introduction of new drugs into the market”.

Conclusions. Thus, the regulation of the commercialization process and the use of various mechanisms for the commercialization of intellectual property in pharmacy will allow companies to achieve undoubted competitive advantages that ensure the implementation of developer’s property rights, as well as commercial advantages for continuing innovation activities, and medical and pharmaceutical institutions and scientific institutions of National Academy of Medical Sciences provide additional financial resources needed for further scientific research.
